Featured Speakers
The fifth president of George Wythe University, Shane S. Schulthies received his Ph.D. in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University where he subsequently taught for 13 years. During his tenure he chaired the Human Subjects Committee, overseeing the ethical standards of all human research at Brigham Young University’s three campuses, and training faculty in ethics in human research across multiple disciplines. He has served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Athletic Training, as an associate editor to the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and has been a contributing author for 23 peer-reviewed articles. He has lectured in the United States, Europe and Asia and has been awarded a variety of professional distinctions in research and teaching. Since engaging in a comprehensive personal education in the liberal arts, he has become significantly involved in political and legislative processes, including various roles in leadership, policy, campaign execution, and advocacy. Prior to his current position, he served as provost at GWU. He is married to the former Kimberly Hanson of San Francisco, California.
Angela Baker is the mother of seven children ages 4-19. She and her husband, Roger, live on a half-acre farm in the rural town of Erda, Utah, where their main crop is children. After ten years of “doing it,” TJ Ed has become a way of life for the Baker family. Angela has a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Science from BYU and a Master’s Degree in Education from GWU. She also earned her 5 Pillar Certification from GWU and then mentored in that program for three years. She directs a children’s chorus and mentors two youth classes for Erda Academy—a leadership-style, mom-run academy for youth and their families. Her favorite part of “school” is reading to her children. She delights in bathrooms she didn’t clean; delicious food she didn’t cook; hearing the words “Can I help?” and spontaneous moments of fun and laughter. She enjoys hiking, running, Taekwondo, and refreshing moments of just sitting.

“The Environment of Greatness From the Inside Out”
(Morning Session)
“The Power of Mentoring”
(Afternoon Session)
Emily Black believes in youth.  From mentoring at several private academies to being a session director for Youth For Freedom, Emily loves each and every experience she has with young people.  She is a popular speaker for youth, and in the past several years has been featured at forums and youth conferences in a number of locations in several states.  Her favorite part of directing a youth conference or event is seeing the light come into faces as new friends are made, barriers broken down, freedom spreads, and young people begin now to "be the change they wish to see in the world."  Emily graduated summa cum laude from George Wythe University, and loves learning second only to doing the right thing for the right reason.  She is also a concert pianist, an avid hiker, a budding chef and visual artist, and a big fan of her amazing family and friends.

Breakout Sessions-

Session 1 (1:00 P.M.)

McKay Earl- “A Father’s Role in a Leadership Education”

McKay first gained a love for the liberal arts and leadership education while attending George Wythe College in 1999.  It was the experience in coming face to face with greatness through the classics that changed his outlook on education.  For the first time learning, although still challenging, become exciting, richly rewarding and intensely enjoyable.

Committed to giving his children this same type of love of learning at the very start, he and his wife, have worked to create an environment of excitement, learning and inspiration through the classics.   In so doing McKay has come to see the power and influence a father can have on their children's education when they understand what their role is, and how to excel at it.  With the fast paced nature of our modern world, McKay has put together some realistic action steps any busy father can take to increase the level of their child's education, take a sizable burden off of their wife's shoulders and increase the love and excitement for learning in their home.

McKay and his wife, Summer live with their 4 children in Chandler Arizona, where he runs his own business from home training entrepreneurs how to use the internet to market themselves and their business.

Clint and Melissa Lawton- “Keeping a Long-Term Perspective in Your Daily Home-Schooling”

Clint and Melissa have 5 children, ages 9 yrs-5 mo. They have enjoyed home-schooling for 4 years, and were introduced to TJed right from the start. Melissa enjoys photography, crafts, nature, and snuggling with her kids while reading good books. Clint received his Bachelors from BYU and works for the Boy Scouts of America. He understands the values that are lacking in so many youth, as well as the solutions to this problem.

The Lawton's have had many changes and opportunities throughout their marriage, including 20 moves in 11 years. These have helped Clint &Melissa learn to prioritize outside activities as well as focus their

family time on the most important things. They have seen how simplicity in life and school makes achieving their goals possible.

Emily Black- “Music in a Leadership Education”

Sarah Brooks- “The Phases: Growing Bicycles, Bridges and Buildings”

Sarah Brooks and her husband Jared are the parents of five children, ages 2-9.  Sarah enjoys playing with her family in the fresh mountain air, being ‘in the moment’, and becoming through reading and discussing great ideas.  When Sarah’s not just being mom, she enjoys mentoring women in creating simplicity and health in their lives.  She is a living example of utilizing the key "You, Not Them," both in completing the Five Pillar Tutorial and her continuing to gain greater understanding of the principles of freedom.  Sarah holds a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from Arizona State University.

Susan Johnson- “Setting the Stage for Your Children’s Education–By Getting Your Own”

Susan and her husband, Rob, live in the East Phoenix area. They both grew up in the valley and have six children and almost eleven grandchildren.  Susan began home-schooling her three youngest children 15 years ago. They discovered George Wythe College where they were initially introduced to a Thomas Jefferson Education.  With the addition of TJEd principles their home-schooling efforts escalated beyond anything she could have hoped for! Susan graduated from Phoenix College in 1976. She taught TJYC for three semesters at TJLA (Commonwealth School), Freedom Project to adults in her ward and completed the 5 Pillar Class. She is currently teaching a Key of Liberty class at the new Arizona Renaissance Commonwealth (ARCS).

Youth Forum-

Frodo, Uncle Tom, Esther, and You: Freedom in the 21st Century

The quest for freedom in your life is much more than having the keys to the car or hoping your parents vote for the right politician.  It is as exciting as a journey across Middle Earth, as real as living your life for a friend, as individually unique as using your talents to walk before a king and save thousands of lives.  This forum will be a day of “action”-packed speakers, activities, and ideas to jump start you as a person who acts instead of being acted upon.

Presenters include Emily Black, Kyle Bateman, and Aubrey Palmer.

“Philosopher Kings:  Developing wise leaders through the Socratic Method”

In the Declaration of Independence Jefferson stated "We hold these truths to be self evident. . . "  However, it appears that these truths are becoming less and less  "evident" to more and more people each year.  How can we develop the wisdom necessary to recognize self evident truths?  How can we help others develop it as well?  Socrates, speaking over 2,400 years ago, outlined four steps for developing wise leaders in his day.  Come and learn how to apply them in ours.
